Felix Hauptmann – YARDS & EMPATHY

In the organizer's words:

In 2026, Cologne-based pianist Felix Hauptmann was commissioned by Cologne Jazzweek and NICA artist development to compose a unique project. With a sensitivity for textures and rhythms, Hauptmann brings together the Lithuanian flutist Ketija Ringa Karahona, the Canadian trumpeter Lina Allemano, the bassist Roger Kintopf and the Cuban drummer Francisco Mela for "Yards & Empathy". In search of ever new stimuli for playing together, the musicians are constantly researching collective musical processes. In a formation selected for this program, Hauptmann's pieces unfold a depth that can only arise from a juxtaposition of regulation and freedom. The musicians' voices interweave to form dense, organic structures in which precisely set forms and free interpretation meet. The result is music that is just as powerful in its calm as it is in its eruptive moments.
