What it’s about:
Sixteen-year-old Sebastian is enjoying his teenage life surrounded by forests, fields, and the country roads of a small town: During the day he studies; at night he winds down the sweltering summer days by the lake with beer and weed, often with his girlfriend. Then Kolja, who’s the same age, suddenly joins his family—supposedly the son of a friend of his father’s who has just passed away. The boy immediately captivates everyone—but no one as much as Sebastian.

What follows is an emotional roller coaster that hurls not only Sebastian but also his family with full force out of their small-town routine. “Free at Heart,” directed by rising star Max Hegewald, is an intense coming-of-age drama about a love that breaks all the rules—and about the feelings that no one wants to admit to, yet can never be turned off. A bold debut film that will be talked about for a long time to come.
