Green Peas and Little Red Dots - Lecture
Why Supermassive Black Holes Were Able to Grow So Large So Quickly
Since 2022, the Webb Space Telescope has been discovering more and more “Little Red Dots.” These are objects that existed a few hundred million years after the Big Bang. It’s possible that they are young galaxies. This is because the properties of their light resemble a rare type of galaxy in today’s universe, known as “green pea” galaxies. The nearest green pea galaxy is only 10 million light-years away from the Milky Way. These galaxies seem to be completely out of sync with time. They exhibit characteristics that astronomers would more readily expect to find in galaxies that formed shortly after the Big Bang. Many Green Peas have a black hole at their center that is actually much too large for such a small galaxy. Something similar is suspected in the case of the Little Red Dots. According to theories, these supermassive black holes form from a dark star that generates energy by annihilating dark matter. Taken together, all of this could help solve the mystery of why supermassive black holes were able to grow so large so quickly in the early universe.
