Mart Kivastik's tragicomic film "Himmelstreppe/Taevatrepp" tells a story about time and music, friendship and love, life today and childhood in Estonia in the 1970s.
A dying friend entrusts Ulf (called Uu) with the secret of how to go back in time. Uu is an engineer and doesn't believe in miracles, but the trick works. A parallel reality opens up in the middle of autumnal Tartu. There is eternal summer, music, long hair and beautiful girls. In his reality, it is autumn, his friends are bitter, the girls are married and his father is seriously ill. In the end, Uu has to decide which time he wants to live his life in - the summer of the past or the fall of the present.
Mart Kivastik, born in 1963 in Tartu, Estonia, is a writer, screenwriter and film director. He studied Estonian philology at the University of Tartu. His stories have been translated into English, Finnish, Russian and Hungarian. His novel "The Stairs" was awarded the Eduard Vilde Literary Prize in 2020. In 2023, he was named Tartu's Writer of the Year 2023.
