Misunderstandings in conversations cost time, energy and often nerves. A seemingly factual comment is taken personally, a well-intentioned instruction comes across as criticism. Why is that? Schulz von Thun's four-ear model of communication shows that every message contains four levels. Depending on which side is emphasized and with which "ear" the recipient hears, different interpretations arise.
