NJANGAAN
In the organizer's words:
NJANGAAN
(Dir.: Mahama Johnson Traoré; Senegal 1975; Original with English subtitles | DCP | 87 min.)
Mame, six years old, is entrusted by his father to a marabout to receive a religious education. But this education does not live up to expectations. In NJANGAAN—a term for children in the “dara,” the traditional Koranic school—director Mahama Johnson Traoré denounces certain religious practices that force children into a system of subjugation and exploit families in the name of religion. The talibé children are turned into begging students with no real education and are used as free labor for the marabout.
