In the organizer's words:
8:00 p.m. | Concert | Concert Hall
Rodrigo Amado is widely regarded as one of the most important European improvisers on the current scene. In this quartet, he brings together three of his greatest long-standing role models, all of whom are outstanding musicians in their own right: the German master pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach, the Norwegian double bass virtuoso Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, and the legendary American drummer Gerry Hemingway.
For Amado, this band represents a profound exploration of his own formative roots. With Schlippenbach, Håker Flaten, and Hemingway by his side, he has the perfect setting to explore the classical elements he considers the foundation of his journey as a musician—an impulse that stems partly from himself and partly from history. As U.S. critic Stuart Broomer wrote: “Amado is an emerging master of a great tradition, a fact that becomes clearer with every new recording or performance.”
This is a quartet whose name—aside from being a direct homage to Sonny Rollins—serves as a bridge between different languages, backgrounds, and generations, all united by improvisation.
