China in the 9th century. As a ten-year-old child, Nie Yinniang, the general’s daughter, is sent into exile and trained by a Taoist nun to become a master assassin. Thirteen years later, she is called upon to put her skills to use in the service of the central government: she is sent back to her former homeland with orders to kill Tian Ji’an—the governor of Weibo, the largest military province in northern China, to whom she had been betrothed as a child. Her return plunges Nie Yinniang into conflicting emotions: torn between memories of an old love, her duty to her master, and the fragile balance of power in her home province.

Hou Hsiao-Hsien, an icon of Asian arthouse cinema, directed his first wuxia film with *The Assassin *. Instead of fast-paced fight scenes, the film is marked by a deliberate calm. He received the Best Director Award at Cannes in 2015 for its hypnotic visual style.

Flingern-Lichtspiele

The summer open-air cinema in Flingern. In August, we screen a total of eight films every Thursday and Saturday on the terrace behind the building. Screenings begin after dark; doors open at 9:00 p.m. Folding chairs and lounge chairs are available, and there is a bar. In case of rain, we’ll show the films indoors. Free admission—donations are welcome.
