Chinatown
US 1974 | 131 min. | Original version with subtitles | Dir.: Roman Polanski, starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, John Huston
Private detective Jake Gittes investigates cases in 1930s Los Angeles, often using underhanded methods. While conducting a routine surveillance of Hollis Mulwray—an official at the municipal waterworks suspected of having an extramarital affair and campaigning against a planned dam project—Jake uncovers corruption on a massive scale. What begins as a simple surveillance assignment soon draws Jake into a web of lies in which nothing and no one is what they seem.
Roman Polanski’s portrayal of California in the first half of the 20th century reveals a decaying society that flouts all moral boundaries for its own enrichment. Meticulously reconstructed in terms of sets, costumes, and architecture, opulently photographed, and carried by a top-notch cast, the film received numerous awards, including four Golden Globes and an Oscar.
