My Father's Shadow
UK/Nigeria 2025 | 94 min. | Original version with subtitles | Dir.: Akinola Davies Jr., starring Sope Dirisu, Efon Wini, Godwin Egbo
Two brothers from rural Nigeria long for their absent father. One day, he takes them on a trip to Lagos. There, they experience beautiful moments, but are also confronted with the difficulties of his daily life—such as a boss who owes him back pay and the tense atmosphere surrounding the presidential elections. This deeply personal debut film intertwines family history with a child’s perspective on a critical phase of Nigerian history: it is set during the 1993 presidential elections, which were filled with hope but later annulled by the military.
The multi-award-winning film celebrated its world premiere in Cannes, where it received a Special Mention for the Caméra d’Or, and was later selected as the British entry for the Oscar in the Best International Feature Film category.
