A Bigger Splash
UK 1973 | 105 min. | Original version with subtitles | Dir.: Jack Hazan
In the early 1970s, director Jack Hazan was part of the close circle of friends surrounding David Hockney, the dazzling figure of London’s art scene during the Swinging Sixties. It’s not an easy time for the brilliant painter: His relationship with Peter Schlesinger has fallen apart, and just now, of all times, he’s struggling to finish his major painting *Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)*, in which Schlesinger, depicted as a clothed figure, watches a swimmer. Nevertheless, Hockney grants the director a glimpse into his life between London, New York, and California—and more than that: he plays himself.
An amalgam emerges from experimentation and illusion, documentary and staging. *A Bigger Splash* becomes a poetic snapshot of the art and gay scenes of the 1970s, quickly becoming a classic and remaining admired to this day.
