Sound of Metal

Drummer Ruben and his girlfriend Lou live for music. As a metal duo, they tour the U.S. together in their RV; their gigs are fueled by adrenaline and noise. Until Ruben experiences every musician’s worst nightmare during a performance: he suffers sudden hearing loss. The doctor’s diagnosis: Ruben will soon be completely deaf. Ruben sees not only his career coming to an end, but his life as well. What follows is a mix of paralyzing fear, denial, and anger. But at Lou’s request, he begins to face his new life in silence—at a facility for deaf people with addiction issues… Darius Marder’s debut film not only impresses with its sound design, which fully lives up to the promise of the title, but is also told in a believable way from start to finish, with complex characters and a profound plot.
