Siblings Satsuki and Mei miss their mother very much; she is ill and has to stay in the hospital for a while. In the meantime, the two explore their new home, an old country house full of secrets and ghostly creatures. Mei and Satsuki encounter the fantastical and cuddly forest spirit Totoro, whom only children can see. One day, little Mei decides to visit her mother at the hospital on her own. How will she find her way there, and how will she find her way back? Can Totoro perhaps help her?
Alongside the family story, the film offers a glimpse into Japanese culture of the 1950s and the Shinto religion, with its spirits and gods that can appear as people, nature spirits, plants, animals, or objects.
