In the organizer's words:

Anton Bruckner himself dismissed his Symphony in F minor as merely a “practice piece.” Yet it is far more than that. It was the first symphony he completed—a work brimming with new beginnings and ambition that was never performed during his lifetime. For conductor Simone Young, it testifies to Bruckner’s hope of establishing himself as one of the great symphonists of the 19th century: “It promises that perseverance and dedication to one’s calling will ultimately prevail.” For the BRSO, the performance marks a premiere. The evening opens with Bach’sRicercar a 6in Anton Webern’s colorful orchestral arrangement. In between is Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E-flat minor, one of the great classics of the repertoire—performed by Augustin Hadelich, whose energy and sensitivity rank him among the outstanding violinists of our time.
