Gerda Laufenbach is actually best known in Cologne for her watercolors depicting the local Cologne milieu. Now she is also making a name for herself as an author: A Cologne suburb, a street between rubble heaps and makeshift shelters, a few years after World War II. This is where eight-year-old Gerda grows up. Surrounded by her eleven aunts and her parents, who seem disturbingly distant, she begins to ask questions. Questions that often go unanswered, and so the intrepid child draws her own conclusions from the oddities of the adult world. With a keen insight into human nature and plenty of humor, Gerda Laufenberg describes the shortcomings of the characters of that era, whom she lovingly brings to life for us.
