The LVR Xanten Archaeological Park and Roman Museum preserves the remains of the second largest Roman city in the Rhineland, Colonia Ulpia Traiana (CUT). However, unlike the larger city of Cologne and all other Roman cities north of the Alps, the CUT was never extensively built over.
Since 1977, when the archaeological park opened on what was initially only a quarter of the ancient city site, visitors have been given a vivid picture of everyday Roman life. The (partial) reconstructions of ancient buildings erected over the original remains contribute to this in particular. In addition, the Roman Museum, built on the foundation walls and in the dimensions of the reception hall of the city's thermal baths, offers almost 3,000 finds, from cattle bones to silver helmets, which tell of life in the Roman city and the nearby legionary camp of Vetera.
But when exactly and why was a second colonia founded on the Lower Rhine? This question will be addressed in the second part of the lecture and is closely linked to the person of Emperor Trajan and the local conditions at the end of the 1st century AD.
