Music in Lars von Trier’s Films
A video lecture with Pascal Rudolph

The end of the world set to Wagner’s*Tristan und Isolde*, a death-row inmate Björk singing at the gallows, Bach’s organ music as an explanation for hypersexuality: Lars von Trier’s films primarily feature music that existed before the films were made. On the one hand, such pre-existing music has a distinct life of its own; on the other hand, something new emerges from its cinematic appropriation.

Using one of today’s most influential directors as an example, this video lecture examines how filmmakers adapt music and how this gives rise to new meanings and effects. Unreleased production material, insider interviews, and numerous film examples provide an exclusive insight into the work behind Lars von Trier’s film projects—and into film music composition processes in general.

Pascal Rudolph is an adjunct professor of media aesthetics with a focus on music at the University of Cologne. He researches and teaches at the intersection of music, media, and pop culture.
