After several years of studying in Europe, Elsa returns to Costa Rica to reconnect with her family. At her parents’ home, she finds only her younger sister—visibly distant and withdrawn, as if slipping into a world of her own. Her parents, meanwhile, are completely preoccupied with themselves: Her father drifts from one affair to the next, while her mother loses herself in a new edition of the erotic poems from her youth. Neither of them grasps the gravity of the situation. Yet Elsa’s return leads the three women to a rediscovery of what still connects them, despite everything.

With her second feature film, Costa Rican director Valentina Maurel reaffirms her standing in a new wave of Latin American cinema. Her dry, controlled realism avoids any melodrama or grand catharsis. At Cannes 2026, the all-female ensemble won the Best Actress Award in the Un Certain Regard section.

Flingern-Lichtspiele

The summer open-air cinema in Flingern. In August, we screen a total of eight films every Thursday and Saturday on the terrace behind the building. Screenings begin after dark; doors open at 9:00 p.m. Folding chairs and lounge chairs are available, and there is a bar. In case of rain, we screen the films indoors.
