Who doesn’t know them: Struwwelpeter with his unkempt hair, Hans-Guck-in-die-Luft, Zappel-Philipp, the Thumb-Sucker, or Suppen-Kaspar. Since their creation in 1845, these characters have come to symbolize a form of education based on deterrence, punishment, and fear. Conceived by the Frankfurt physician and psychiatrist Dr. Heinrich Hoffmann, the stories were originally intended to be an entertaining way of urging children to behave—yet their pedagogical core carries drastic consequences: Those who won’t listen will have to feel the consequences!
The Badische Landesbühne is now using this classic as a starting point for a contemporary exploration. In their production, *Struwwelpeter* becomes a dark revue of the depths of human depravity. Surreal imagery, live music, and highly exaggerated characters come together to create a fascinating evening of theater. Authority figures are called into question, blind obedience is exposed, and “black pedagogy” is deconstructed in a macabre yet comical way.
Somewhere between slapstick, the grotesque, and a quiet horror show, these seemingly harmless children’s stories begin to unravel. The production takes the unease of the conformists to the extreme and asks: What fears, compulsions, and inner monsters lie dormant within us—then as now? Humor and horror lie close together here; laughter often gets stuck in your throat.
Here, *Struwwelpeter* is not a nostalgic collection of illustrations, but a powerful, musically charged theatrical experience. An evening that provokes, unsettles, and entertains—and that shows just how thin the line between education and violence, order and oppression, can be.
