Das Narrenschiff

Sebastian Brandt’s *The Ship of Fools*, published in Basel in 1494, was translated into five languages and became a Europe-wide bestseller. In 115 chapters, the book pokes fun at people who act foolishly or deviate from the norm—those who are embarrassing, rude, greedy, cruel, envious, hedonistic, selfless, soft-hearted, vain, lazy, stubborn, talkative, incorrigible, mortal—those who have too many emotions, fall in love with the wrong people, and drink too much; those who can’t get their lives together, procrastinate, and show too little respect for authority—and, on top of that, simply love to dance. A panopticon where we sometimes recognize ourselves and then again, not at all. It shows us what we’ve long since—at least for the most part—overcome (think table manners, owning women, believing in hell) and what has since switched sides—from sanctioned behavior to the new, joyful norm. From shame to joy, from morality to freedom. And what we still can’t seem to figure out: how to deal with money and poverty. Above all, though, this idea of the fool persists with such painful tenacity—this idea of the Other, the deviant, the notion of someone or something that should be shut out, shipped off, away, just away. It’s a utopia, but tonight we’re all in the same boat. Cast off!

Double Reed Tales Dulzianconsort Berlin
Some of the members of the Dulzianconsort Double Reed Tales Berlin have known each other since their studies at the HfK Bremen, the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, and the UdK Berlin. For over 10 years, they have repeatedly performed together in various configurations as specialists in historical woodwind instruments in leading European ensembles (Collegium 1704, “Das kleine Konzert” Hermann Max, Gächinger Kantorei, etc.).
Research by the project’s initiator, Elisabeth Kaufhold, into the origins and development of the dulcian repertoire led to the idea of founding a five-part dulcian consort to jointly perform this rarely heard repertoire for this instrumentation.
