GRASSHOPPER REPUBLIC deals with the strange cycle of grasshopper harvesting in Uganda. When the locusts come from the sky - "from the moon", according to local legend - they are lured by hunters who set up huge and dangerous makeshift devices. Chemically treated light bulbs cast a garish neon green haze over the treetops, attracting the locusts en masse. The sky flickers with insects. The locusts are caught in swarms before being sold by the bagful at markets.

The documentary is an impressive cinematic spectacle that explores the beauty and enormity of this local phenomenon.

The film celebrates its German premiere at Stranger Than Fiction.
