With the Zen-Funk quartet RONIN, founded in 2001, Nik Bärtsch continues to develop his “Ritual Groove Music.” Together with Jeremias Keller (bass), Kaspar Rast (drums), and Sha (bass clarinet), the Zurich-based composer and pianist performs music that follows a consistent aesthetic: achieving maximum impact with minimal means.
Despite the diversity of its influences, this music always bears a distinct signature. Although elements from a wide variety of musical worlds have found their way into it—from funk to new classical to the sounds of Japanese ritual music—these forms are not juxtaposed or quoted in a postmodern manner, but rather fuse into a new style. The result is groovy music that is highly sophisticated in both sound and rhythm, composed of just a few phrases and motifs that are combined and layered in ever-changing and varied ways.
In this way, RONIN creates an aesthetic that is consistently maintained across all levels of musical expression. Composition, phrasing, timbre, performance style, and piece structure together form a unified whole in which all parts are interrelated.
