Filmmaker Hendrik Maximilian Schmitt turns the land of poets and thinkers into the land of dice players and puzzlers. For four decades now, the board game world has looked to Essen at least once a year. What is now the world's largest trade fair for board games takes place in the Ruhr metropolis. Exhibitors from over 50 nations present their latest creations to an ever-growing audience. But who are the creative minds behind the sometimes ingenious, sometimes incredibly complex constructions that adorn numerous living room cupboards not only in this country and are patiently waiting to be used? Schmitt explores this question in his film with a keen sense of what is worth telling. In the midst of this polyphony, he also succeeds impressively in repeatedly working out the common and unifying passion. The desire to play. SPIELEREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND awakens this desire. The film takes the child in us by the hand and shows how games are actually created.
