SQUARING THE CIRCLE - THE STORY OF HIPGNOSIS
GB 2022 - 101' - OmU - Director: Anton Corbijn
In his first documentary, acclaimed photographer, creative director and filmmaker Anton Corbijn tells the story of Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell, the creative geniuses behind the iconic design studio Hipgnosis, responsible for some of the most recognizable album covers of all time. They founded Hipgnosis in Cambridge during the upheaval of the sixties and became kings of rock music during the boom of the seventies. They created sights that no one had previously thought possible, produced images that popularized music previously considered insignificant, and were at the center of the craziest, funniest and most creative era in the history of popular music.
During this time, record companies didn't dictate to artists like Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Paul McCartney what their LP covers should look like - Storm and Po did. They never played a note, but they changed the music. The film includes brand new interviews with Roger Waters, David Gilmour and Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Graham Gouldman of 10cc, Noel Gallagher and many more.
